CHARLES DICKENS

Who Was Charles Dickens?:
Charles Dickens was a British novelist, journalist, editor, illustrator, and social commentator who wrote such beloved classic novels as Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations.
Early life and Education:
Dickens was born Charles John Huffam Dickens on February 7, 1812, in Portsmouth, on the southern coast of England. The famed British author was the second of eight children. His father, John Dickens, was a naval clerk who dreamed of striking it rich. Charles' mother, Elizabeth Barrow, aspired to be a teacher and school director. Despite his parents’ best efforts, the family remained poor. Nevertheless, they were happy in the early days. In 1816, they moved to Chatham, Kent, where young Dickens and his siblings were free to roam the countryside and explore the old castle at Rochester. In 1822, the Dickens family moved to Camden Town, a poor neighbourhood in London. By then the family’s financial situation had grown dire, as John Dickens had a dangerous habit of living beyond the family’s means.
Journalist, Editor, and Illustrator:
Within a year of being hired, Dickens began freelance reporting at the law courts of London. Just a few years later, he was reporting for two major London newspapers. In 1833, he began submitting sketches to various magazines and newspapers under the pseudonym Boz. In 1836, his clippings were published in his first book, Sketches by Boz.
Children:
Dickens married Catherine Hogarth soon after his first book, Sketches by Boz, was published. The couple had a brood of 10 children. During the 1850s, Dickens suffered two devastating losses: the deaths of his daughter and father. He also separated from his wife in 1858.
Works:
'Oliver Twist' Oliver Twist, Dickens's first novel, follows the life of an orphan living in the streets. The book was inspired by how Dickens felt as an impoverished child forced to get by on his wits and earn his own keep. 'A Christmas Carol' On December 19, 1843, Dickens published A Christmas Carol. The book features the timeless protagonist Ebenezer Scrooge, a curmudgeonly old miser, who, with the help of ghosts, finds the Christmas spirit. Dickens penned the book in just six weeks, beginning in October and finishing just in time for the holiday celebrations. 'Dealings with the Firm of Dombey and Son' 'David Copperfield' 'Bleak House' 'Hard Times' Hard Times takes place in an industrial town at the peak of economic expansion. 'A Tale of Two Cities' 'Great Expectations
Other Novels:
After the publication of Oliver Twist, Dickens struggled to match the level of its success. From 1838 to 1841, he published The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiosity Shop, and Barnaby Rudge.
Society:
The society was divided into two classes:
- Upper class: occupied eighty percent of England since it was divided into two parts: middle class and rich
In the upper-class people had a job and a lot of lands
- Lower class: It was the poor class, people worked in the mines, as housewives, as servants ...
Children from the age of 4 were wanted to be trained to work in places such as textile industries
The style of dickens:
Dickens's style is flowery and poetic, with a strong comic touch.
But he also speaks easily of serious things like poverty and hunger.
For example, in Oliver twist, he speaks about a child who has no parents and works as a servant until one day he gets tired of being treated badly and leaves London

MY LAST POST

To say goodbye I wanted to write a last entry, about this year, so that in a few years time I can return to this one reading it:
I still remember how nervous I was in the summer because I was very afraid of the high school, and the first day I was even more afraid of being alone. This year I have learned to value things, especially with the death of several of my relatives with what is happening now, and I have learned to do things that I knew I could do, different cultures and much more. I remember the first week with the blog, what a mess !, and when Abby taught us what institutes were like in the USA, and thanks to this I will go to exchange there when all this goes by. That is to say, this year good and bad things have happened, but I keep both of them because in good times and bad, people learn and make mistakes, which thanks to them you don't make them again.

MY SELF ASSESSMENT

   1. WHAT CAN YOU DO NOW?
I now understand English much better than a few years ago, especially since this quarantine has given me a lot of time to think and learn.

   2. YOUR OPINION ABOUT YOUR BLOG-PORTFOLIO
The truth is that I had never imagined what it would be like to have my own blog, and I am quite satisfied with the result

   3. YOUR SKILLS: READING,WRITING,LISTENING, SPEAKING,
I know that in class I can speak much better, because when I'm at home my pronunciation is quite good, but when I get to class and it's my turn to speak I get very nervous and I get confused all the time

BUSKAID

Buskaid is a unique initiative. Its aim is to give young people from Soweto the opportunity to explore and fulfil their musical potential, through high-quality tuition on the violin, viola, cello and double bass at the Buskaid Music School. This has the added benefit of improving their educational and social prospects, and transforming their whole local community.
It was founded in 1992 by British viola player Rosemary Nalden in response to an item on the BBC's Today programme highlighting the difficulties of a group of young string players in Diepkloof, Soweto.

MY RECIPE FROM FINLAND

Mustikkapiirakka (blueberry pie)

Easy Blueberry Pie – Lemon Tree Dwelling

INGREDIENTS

Filling ingredients:
  • 6 cups (about 2 1/4 pounds or 1 kilo) of fresh (or frozen) blueberries, rinsed and stems removed (if using frozen, defrost and drain first)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup (about 30g) cornstarch, all-purpose flour, or quick cooking "minute" tapioca* (for thickening)
  • 1/2 cup white granulated sugar (100g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Egg wash ingredients:
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk
*If you use minute tapioca, it will help if you grind it up first in a spice grinder or mini-processor

METHOD

1 Prepare the bottom crust: Remove a dough disk from refrigerator and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes to take the chill off. Place it on a lightly floured clean, flat surface. Roll it out into a circle about 13 inches wide. Place the rolled out dough on to a 9-inch pie pan. Trim the edges to 1/2 inch over the edge of the plan. Place in the refrigerator to chill.
2 Make the blueberry filling: Place the blueberries, sugar, cornstarch (or flour or quick tapioca), cinnamon, lemon zest, and lemon juice in a large bowl. Gently stir them so that all of the blueberries are coated with some sugar and flour.
3 Fill the bottom crust with the berries: Remove the bottom crust from the refrigerator and place the sugar coated berries into the pan.
4 Roll out the second dough disk to the same size and thickness as the first. Place on top of the berry filling. Tuck the top dough over and under the edge of the bottom dough, and crimp the edges with your fingers. Place in refrigerator while you make the egg wash.
5 Preheat oven to 425°F.
6 Brush top of pie with egg wash: Whisk egg and milk together to make an egg wash. Brush the top crust with egg wash. Score the pie on the top with several cuts (so steam can escape while cooking).
7 Bake: Place the pie on the middle rack of the oven with a foil or Silpat lined baking pan positioned on the lower rack to catch any filling that may bubble over. Bake for 20 minutes at 425°. Reduce heat to 350°F and bake for 30 to 40 minutes more or until juices are bubbling and have thickened. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Let cool completely before serving.

CAMDEN MARKET

Camden Markets consists of six different markets in and around Camden Town, and are located near Camden Lock. The Camden Markets attract more than 100,000 tourists each weekend (making it London's fourth most popular tourist attraction), venturing into the area to get deals on clothing, accessories and other craft items. Believe it or not, Camden Markets are relatively new to London, as the area surrounding Camden Lock was initially used for agricultural and industrial purposes since before the 1800s.
Of all the markets located in Camden, Camden Lock Village is perhaps the most famous. These markets are completely filled with all kinds of unique and handmade items, and are located along The Regent’s Canal towpath (near the northeast section of the highway bridge at Chalk Farm).
Even children's clothing, it is impossible to know what fashion items you will find in the Camden Lock Market, which is located north of The Regent’s Canal. Not only limited to clothing, here you can also find food stalls offering all kinds of food from all over the world, as well as handmade jewelry, second-hand clothes, books and other household items that you will not find anywhere. another place in the city. Camden Market | The Darlington Hyde Park

ELLA & PITR

They paint canvases, walls, floors, and ceilings. They live and work in Saint-Étienne where they have their workshop. They make Street Art or urban art with which they manage to revitalize various public spaces and bring art closer to people. They define themselves as two stray dogs, who observe, look at everything around them and rescue through urban art “abandoned, gray or empty” urban spaces. They also defend the idea that public space belongs to everyone and that life is a permanent imbalance, Their first drawings were made by Saint-Étienne, whose walls have a special magic for them. "They're pretty, they have a story, they witness the past," the duo explained via email to The Huffington Post. «St. Étienne is an old city, there used to be many coal mines and it is easy to find abandoned buildings where we can work. ”They consider urban art to have a political meaning. That is, they create an accident on the street for people to react. "People work and travel and walk through the city that is in constant movement and suddenly they find this piece of art, with this photo or mural that sets their minds in motion
